Northern Catch Wild Alaska Pink Salmon

Northern Catch is a label for seafood products that is exclusively sold through the privately owned company Aldi. Aldi's stores offer a no-frills and very basic shopping experience with most brands unique to the store. The shopping carts require a quarter to unchain and you get your quarter back after returning the cart. There are very few employees compared to traditional grocery stores, you must bring your own grocery bags or purchase them at the register, bag your own groceries and Aldi is able to pass the savings from these cost-saving methods down to the consumer. These stores are run very efficiently -- no big surprise considering it is a German company.

The smell of this salmon upon opening the can is pleasant and nearly indistinguishable from the smell of canned tuna. However, the scent of this canned salmon is a little bit stronger than tuna. This can is PACKED with firm pieces of salmon, including the skin and bones -- good if you like your fish full of vitamins and minerals. The taste is very similar to tuna except that this salmon has a deeper flavor that I find quite enjoyable, my cats like it as well.

The flesh is firm and the bones are definitely noticeable, one could probably pick the spinal cord of the fish out if it really bothers them. This fish is not too salty and would be well suited to making salmon patties with breadcrumbs, egg, and a little bit of lemon juice. A good can of fish that packs a good amount of omega 3 fatty acids. I will buy this again for sure.

The only problem with this product is a problem that exists with all salmon products; salmon, being fairly large carnivorous fish, tend to collect large amounts of pollutants like mercury in their bodies. Therefore, people who are susceptible to these pollutants, like pregnant women and very young children, may want to avoid large carnivorous fish.

However, this product is graded by me only by the merits of what it is, and it is an exceptional product that Aldi sells through the Northern Catch label. Thus, Northern Catch Canned Pink Salmon gets 5 cylinders of salmon out of 5. I definitely recommend trying this product, and don't forget the quarter for your cart!

  5. Bought this for the first time, this week, at Aldi. What a wonderful product. So much better than the other canned, pouched salmon. Love that it is wild caught, not farm raised, and not dyed pink like farmed salmon. Hope Aldi has more. I'd like a case of this!

    1. Canned salmon is an execelant food stored in emergency food reserves. High in good quality protien along with rice. A little goes a long way. Resonable in price, too.

    4. Where do you see this is "wild caught"? At this price-point, and nothing on the can (that I can see) regarding 'wild caught...we have no reason to think it's not gmo/toxic-pond fish :(

  6. Just bought my first (and LAST) can of this product. Did not find many bones and only a little skin, but much of the meat was very dark and tough--not something I wanted to eat. My cats' canned Friskies tuna cat food looked more appetizing than this can of salmon. (The cats did seem to thoroughly enjoy eating my can of salmon!)

    1. Sure you can [no pun intended]. It is still my favorite way to consume it. Simply squeeze out the liquid, which is a little bit difficult because of the shape of the can. Then mix the entire content to blend in skin and bones. You can eat it directly or you can mix it with mayo and celery. I tend to over-endulge by eating the entire can [7 servings, 630 Kcal, and a considerable amount of salt].

    2. Yeah, if you don't mind straining bones and other kack out of that mess like a whale filters krill. Watch out for hooks and hair too.

  12. We just opened a can and it looked like something scraped of the cleaning table at the dock. Bones, skin and other stuff made it look like some bizarre fish abattoir in a can. You know, it doesn't have to be gross to be healthy. Who cleaned this fish? Ray Charles?

  13. Bought one recently and was disappointed seeing lot of tiny bones in it.. had a hard time taking them out and was also scared to give to the kids.. otherwise the taste and quality was good. Looked to be already cooked.

  14. The salmon is good for loafs or salmon cakes but the can is all but impossible to open. I’ve tried two different opener types on several occasions and always end up using an old type triangle punch opener and then have to fight to get the top (bottom) off without cutting myself. I think this is due to the sloped sides of the can. I suggest the canning facility try opening some and let me know what type of opener works. This is most frustrating.

    1. Try opening the can upside down with an opener. Its been a while but I remember doing it differently. For $2.50/15 oz of wild caught Alaskan, it's a steal. The bones and spine are so thoroughly cooked, once you get used to the texture, it adds a lot of nutrients. Kids of a suitable age would be safe to eat the bones. I've never once thought I, or anyone, could choke on them.

  15. I had several cans of this that was so full of bones I could not pick them all out. Through the last two cans out to the dogs. Will not buy this brand again.

  16. First time trying this brand there were small pieces of glass in it. Can't find a way to contact them.

  17. LOL! What is this world coming to?! You got people that are scared to eat the terrifying bones, people scared of the skin and the "glass", people that cant figure out how to open the can, and the regular joe breed of sissy that cant stand the sight of it! Get ahold of yourselves, it's a wad of salmon shoved in a can! Grab a fork and eat!

    1. I agree with you. Anybody should be able to tell that you turn the can upside-down to open. Also, I never bought a can that was 1/4 bones. A little bit of bones cooked down adds calcium to your diet. They are upset about a little bit of "tough" skin too. The skin actually has a higher concentration of nutrients including omega-3 fatty acids. Wild caught pink Alaskan Salmon that is good quality at the best price around, and they ignorantly complain about it?

  18. just tried it out tonight.
the meat is great. But there are so many bones in it all I can say is I hope the fish was dead before they canned it.
    5/5 for flavor
    5/5 for nutrition
    2/5 for plate-readiness

  19. I love this canned salmon. It tastes great and i love the bones and skin and actually refer that they are included with the rest of the fish. makes great salmon patties..bones and all. the bones are soft and easily smashed in making patties, or eat them and they add calcium and are easily chewed as thy are softened in the canning/cooking process. Yum!

  20. I always picked out the tapeworm before eating. Nice-n-fat flat segmented tape worm usually running along the spine. I actually like the bones and spine vertebre.

  21. How to open the can? I tried with a common opener, but it doesn’t work.

  22. I plan to eat one can of the Aldi pink Salmon a week because I saw video by Dr Martha Clare Morris that said eating fish once a week will lower a persons chance of Dementia 60%

    2. "Wild Alaska" does **not** indicate (in any way), this is wild-caught salmon. Wild-caught salmon is generally much more expensive...and is ALWAYS clearly labeled.

      Delete
  26. Is there a purpose to the shape of the can that the less expensive pink salmon comes in?

    1. Salmon is canned and pressured cooked (in the can) at the fisheries for only a couple months out of the year. The shape of the can is such that empty cans can be stacked inside one another making shipping to, and storing in, remote locations cheaper and take up less space.

  27. I think the Aldi Northern Catch Pink Salmon is great. I love it right out of the can- bones, skin and all. Today I made Salmon Patties with a can of Aldi Northern Catch Pink Salmon -drain the liquid all from the can of salmon and then mash up with bones and skin and all, add about 3/4 cup of finely chopped sweet onion, two eggs beaten well to hold it together, black pepper, dill weed and garlic powder, form into patties and cooked in oil in a pan medium heat 7 minutes side one, 5 minutes side two until golden brown on each side. The salmon patties were fantastic. I'm making them again next week, so I'm off to Aldi to get several more cans of their Northern Catch Pink Salmon!
